From Cookstown to Courcelette: Private George Copeland and WWI

When the First World War broke out, George Albert Copeland of Cookstown enlisted for service overseas alongside thousands of Canadians. This free presentation by Sara Karn at the Lakeshore Branch traces Private Copeland’s life from his early days through to his wartime experiences, until his death at Courcelette in September 1916. You will learn more about how a local Innisfil resident uncovered Private Copeland’s story and honoured his memory during a battlefield tour in France last spring. Listen to excerpts from newspapers and war diaries, examine maps and photographs, and view material culture brought back from the battlefields. As we commemorate the centennial of the First World War, let us remember the ordinary soldiers whose stories deserve to be told.
